The 10-minute bedtime ritual that actually stuck

April 6, 2026

We bought the card deck. We bought two card decks, actually. One for date nights, one for "deeper conversations." Both are in a drawer somewhere.

The date night deck was fine when we actually had date nights, which was roughly never. The deeper conversations deck had some good questions mixed in with questions that felt like landmines. We'd draw a card, read it, look at each other, and say "...next."

The problem with physical cards is that they're all-or-nothing. You either pull the deck out and commit to A Thing, or you don't. There's no casual version. And by 9pm on a Tuesday, "committing to A Thing" is exactly the energy neither of us has.

What ended up working was much simpler. A few prompts on a phone screen. No ceremony. No shuffling cards. No deciding which deck to use. Just: open, read, talk.

The key was making it short enough that it didn't feel like an activity. Ten minutes. Sometimes five. Sometimes we'd get into a conversation that went longer, but the app itself was done in ten. That's it.

The other key was that neither of us wrote the questions. With the card decks, I was always the one pulling them out, which meant I was always the one "making us do the thing." With the app, the questions just appear. Neither of us is the facilitator. We're both just reading the same screen.

Three months later, we still use it maybe twice a week. Not every night. Not on a schedule. Just when one of us thinks of it. It's become the thing we do instead of scrolling our separate phones until we fall asleep.

That's all it had to be.
