What to do when you're both in bed and have nothing to say

April 3, 2026

It's 9:15pm. You're both in bed. She's on her phone. You're on yours. The kids are finally asleep. The kitchen is sort of clean. Tomorrow is already tomorrow.

You could say something. But what? The only topics that come to mind are logistics. Did you call the dentist? What time is soccer on Saturday? Are we out of milk?

You don't want to talk about milk. But you also don't have anything else loaded up. Your brain is empty except for task management. Hers probably is too.

So you scroll. She scrolls. Eventually one of you says "I'm going to sleep" and the other says "okay" and the phones go on the nightstands and that's it. Another night of being three feet apart and completely separate.

This isn't a crisis. Nobody's fighting. Nobody's unhappy. You're just... not connecting. And it accumulates so gradually that you don't notice until you realize you can't remember the last time you talked about something that wasn't a calendar event.

Here's what helped us: something external that gives you a topic. Not a deep topic. Not "where do you see us in five years." Just a simple prompt that gets one of you talking and the other listening.

Things like: a trip you're glad happened. A random childhood memory. Something you noticed about the other person this week.

Tiny. Easy. Answerable in ten seconds. But enough to start a conversation that might last thirty seconds or might last twenty minutes. The prompt is just the spark.

We use an app called JustGlow for this. But honestly, you could write prompts on index cards and pull one from a jar. The format doesn't matter. What matters is having something — anything — to replace the scroll-and-silence pattern with actual words.

The bar is really low. You don't need a breakthrough. You just need to talk about something that isn't milk.
